I began 'serious' painting after retirement in 1992 and I began to experiment with different media and styles. I am still experimenting since no particular style has emerged to mark my work as a 'Fred' painting. I paint in oils, acrylic, pastel and pen-and-ink in styles ranging from pure realism to abstract, with subjects ranging from heroic fantasy, portraiture, landscape and decorative art. The Art Nouveau and Pre-Raphaelite movements have always exercised a firm grip on my imagination and strongly conditions my painting and drawing style(s). I have been told often enough that I am more an illustrator than a 'fine' artist but I tend to regard illustration as applied fine art rather than a separate branch of art as the purists would have it.
Meanwhile I continue to experiment with the odd notion that the it might be the subject that defines the style, not the painter! High fantasy demands hard-edge realism in oils or acrylic; Boardroom portraits formal realism usually in oil; a misty landscape or 'character' portrait may be best in loose pastel, and so on.
